![]() The Plustek SmartOffice PS286 Plus scanner helps Goodwill go digitalLocated in the heart of Astoria, Queens, NY, Goodwill Industries of Greater NY and Northern NJ, Inc.® offers workforce development services, youth and community programs and retail and business opportunities to diverse populations across the region. In 2009, Goodwill Industries of Greater NY and Northern NJ helped more than 164,000 people search and train for careers in industries such as banking, IT and health care, to name a few — and get the supporting services they needed to be successful, such as English language training, additional education, or access to transportation and child care. More than 13,000 people obtained meaningful employment in 2009 through their participation in Goodwill programs. The investment to support this initiative was $28 million in government grants and fees for employment services. These people were placed in competitive employment and went on to earn $274 million in their first year of work and paid $54 million in taxes. The savings in public assistance to taxpayers was $107 million. That is a ROI of $407 million in salaries and wages - a meaningful contribution to their communities as productive, tax-paying citizens. To keep the organization functioning at its highest potential, Goodwill uses over 100 Plustek SmartOffice PS286 Plus scanners at sites scattered over the New York metro area, by job coaches, counselors, assistants and even the receptionists. The receptionist scans the clients Goodwill issued ID cards when they arrive at the facility; the counselors scan any paperwork that the client has that proves they worked, attended training or applied for jobs over the previous week; and assistants scan forms that the clients fill out as part of their job coaching and counseling. It is estimated that the scanning volume of the Goodwill New York metro offices is nearly 1,000 pages a day on some devices – keeping the organization efficient and streamlined. "We are very happy with the performance of the scanners, and will be buying more in 2011," said Andre Bromes, Chief Information Officer for Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey. "So far, we have not had any scanner failures and the ROI on the scanners is beyond our expectations." Bromes says the combination of the price-point and functionality of Plustek’s PS286 Plus increased efficiencies contributed (among other things) to the rapid ROI on their Welfare to Work project – just 45 days! A higher priced scanner would have limited these Goodwill facilities from scanning all of their paperwork at their desks. Each counselor needs their own scanner, which helps them to scan client documents without having to leave their desk area and leave the conversation with the people they are working with – which increases the number of clients each counselor can see a day thereby increasing efficiencies. An ideal solution for small businesses, the Plustek SmartOffice PS286 Plus is a compact, high-speed desktop scanning solution that effortlessly converts paper into digital files. Despite its small size, the PS286 Plus offers industry standard TWAIN and Windows® WIA drivers you can be assured of compatibility with virtually any imaging software. The convenient, programmable DocAction Single-Touch function button permits users to pre-set nine customized functions for different scanning jobs. Users can create searchable PDFs, scan to e-mail, OCR, or file documents by simply pressing a button. The SmartOffice PS286 Plus is bundled with a powerful suite of software applications and includes advanced features such as blank page deletion, color dropout for forms, auto-crop and de-skew to enhance image quality, increase OCR accuracy and reduce rescans. ![]() ACCOUNTANT FINDS GOING PAPERLESS USING PLUSTEK SCANNER MAKES GOOD ‘CENTS’The Plustek SmartOffice PS286 Plus scanner helps CPA office manage tax documents Tami Henry has been an accountant for 15 years, currently working at the offices of Terry M. Rabe, CPA. Tami’s responsibilities include prepping the accounting documents for various small businesses during tax season, as well as handling tax returns and archiving all of the original documents filed. The job role requires her to ensure that all documents and records are saved and filed for review in an ongoing and timely manner. Her scanning duties become even more sensitive (and time intensive) when it is tax season (January 1st-April 15th). “Our offices recently implemented going paperless with all accounting services for several clients,” explained Tami. “We use the Plustek SmartOffice PS286 Plus on a daily basis to scan supporting documentation for tax returns and forms like W-2’s and 10-99’s. We no longer keep any paper files on the tax clients.” Tami uses the SmartOffice PS286 Plus with eFileCabinet software that offers solutions to store, share and protect their valuable and confidential business data assets. Tami finds relief in a dedicated document scanning solution that is convenient, efficient and produces quality images. The Plustek SmartOffice PS286 Plus is a 25 page per minute, color duplex document scanner that features an integrated, flip out 50-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF). The PS286 Plus can scan batches of mixed sized documents from business card sized up to 8.5 x 17” including embossed ID cards and driver licenses. Tami appreciates how technologically advanced her office has become. “Right after I scan my pages, they are immediately displayed right up on my computer screen,” said Tami. “The Plustek SmartOffice PS286 Plus and eFileCabinet software saves me time not having to go pull physical files, when I can pull it up with just a few clicks of my mouse.” Although Tami’s office also has a competitive brand scanner, she is happy with the Plustek scanner because of the quality and price. “The quality is comparable in the job both scanners do, no paper jams or mis-feeds, but the price of the competitive scanner is twice as much,” said Tami. “I would recommend the Plustek SmartOffice PS286 Plus scanner to CPA’s, accountants, and small businesses that have a need for wanting to save any documents electronically.” The Plustek SmartOffice PS286 Plus is an ideal solution for accountants, financial institutions, hospitals, law firms and small businesses. The medical industry is typically bogged down with paperwork, but now more and more doctors, clinicians, administrators, and assistants are using scanners to bridge to paperless. Plustek’s SmartOffice PS286 Plus and the PS406U scanners are popular models in the medical industry because they are fast, light, mobile and take up very little space. These scanners are able to quickly scan patient registration, medical records, insurance cards and identification cards, which are a very important part of the administrative and clinical process for hospitals and clinics. For over 11 years AutoMED has delivered software solutions to hospitals and medical clinics. AutoMED works with doctors to make their workday more efficient and effective. Clinicians are often mobile, working between several clinics and need to keep their patient files and information paperless in a single location. AutoMED and Plustek have partnered to provide effective and affordable paperless solutions to medical clinics and physicians. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 set aside nearly $20 billion in incentive payments for physicians who adopt electronic health record technology over the next five years. In order to qualify for the incentive monies, physicians must be using certified technology, allowing nearly every physician in America to gain up to $63,000 in incentives to switch to an electronic environment. Plustek and AutoMED solutions make these recovery monies a reality for physicians. This has sparked incredible interest in going paperless and allowed Plustek and AutoMED to service this need. “Clinician doctors often work at several different facilities and have to juggle their time and efforts running between offices,” said Joe Persky, vice president of AutoMED. “Our focus is to provide solutions allowing for improved efficiency and increased productivity; the Plustek scanners keep them mobile and paperless without breaking the bank. These scanners are light and rugged enough to withstand constant transport without failure; powerful enough to upload medical records in seconds; compact enough to fit in even the tightest workspaces and affordable enough to allow clinics of all sizes to benefit.” In fact Mr. Persky says prior to the Plustek option, “the average clinic was paying triple for scanners which were slower, heavier and bulkier.” ABOUT PLUSTEK’S SMARTOFFICE PS286 PLUS: The Plustek SmartOffice PS286 Plus workgroup class document scanner is designed with the image quality, paper handling and reliability required by the most demanding business users but at a price point attractive to home and SOHO users.
